The World Poker Tour got back in action over the weekend as the WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open Main Event saw its two starting days contested on Sunday and Monday. Players are still allowed to register through the first break on Day 2, so we won't know the official tournament figures for a little while yet, but so far, 1,120 players have signed up. Leading the 588 Day 1 survivors into Tuesday is Jean 'Prince' Gaspard with 216,900 chips.
Gaspard is one of those guys whose record casual fans will look at and say, 'Wow, I didn't realize he was so accomplished.'
According to TheHendonMob.com, Gaspard has over $2.3 million live tournament earnings. His largest cash came just this past summer, when he won the 2016 World Series of Poker $10,000 Dealers Choice 6-Handed Championship for $306,621, the first gold bracelet of his career. Gaspard also won a WSOP Circuit event in 2009, the New Orleans & Bayou Poker Challenge Championship Event, for $211,722.
Gaspard told WPT.com that he took the week off before the Borgata Winter Poker Open so that he could come in fresh.
'I've been ready, and I told my friend I was going to bag up 200K,' he said. 'Obviously you've got to run a little bit good. I played well, and I didn't run bad. The one spot where I did run bad in a pot, usually I allow that to stay in my mind, but I erased it right away.'
As mentioned, there were 1,120 registrations in the two starting flights. The tournament allows for unlimited re-entries until the start of Level 11, which should be around 2:15pm today. Thus, it is very likely that likely that last year's field of 1,171 players will be eclipsed. With the entry totals as they stand right now, the guaranteed prize pool of $3 million has already been surpassed.
Day 2 is about to start at the Borgata in Atlantic City as the players prepare for the continued long grind to the final table.

A 29-year-old won his first World Poker Tour title Feb. 3 at WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open. Daniel Weinman, the player in question, was also celebrating his birthday, making the win a double whammy.
'This is a pretty awesome birthday present,' said Weinman to the WPT. 'My girlfriend flew in last minute, you couldn't have scripted it any better.'
Weinman hasn't played many tournaments outside of the World Series of Poker. He holds just over $2 million in career tournament earnings. He's credited with inventing the Fantasyland variation of open-face Chinese poker.
Weinman takes home $892,433 after coming out ahead of the 1,312 player field, a record for the event.

This was anything but easy for Weinman, who was in a tough spot between calling and folding, but then he remembered reading something where Kenney had been timid to make moves at his other WPT Final Table.
'I kind of had this feeling that the first time he really kind of turned up the heat, he might be light,' Weinman said to the WPT. 'It was close, he didn't have a ton of hands he could do that with for value. I would either look really stupid or I'd look like a hero forever.'
After 10 hands, eliminations began. Nicholas Immekus was first, taking sixth place for $184,787. Jia Liu (fourth, $275,081) and Kenney (third, $327,578) would follow.
Weinman had a massive chip lead heading into the heads-up battle with Nathan Bjerno. Borgata casino room rates. He held 33.8 million in comparison to the measly 5.55 million Bjerno was holding. Bjerno would never find his way out.
The final hand had Weinman moving all in preflop. Bjerno would call all in for 3,450,000 with . Weinman held . The board came , so Bjerno could pair his four on the river, but that gave Weinman the eight-high straight to win the pot and the title.
Weinman received the title, the WPT Champions trophy and an inscription on the WPT Champions Cup. His prize money also includes a $15,000 seat into the WPT Tournament of Champions.
